Did You Know…?

Did you know about Birdie Juice? Deb Richlen serves up some research – thanks, Deb!

The term conjures up a lot of weird ideas, doesn’t it? Fortunately, in the golfing world it is associated with that most wonderful of shots, the birdie (one under par). As a new golfer, I had no idea what birdie juice was about since I was never exposed to the ritual due to a lack of skill and opportunity. My good friend, Carol, from Idaho Falls, was horrified to find out that I was missing out on this most excellent beverage. She bought me a lovely flask and provided me with her recipe for the best juice ever. I was then more than happy to introduce birdie juice to my fellow league players. I’m betting someone else had a flask in their bag, too, but maybe they weren’t eager to have a photo of themselves toasting a birdie posted on Facebook. I’m happy to report that the juice has been a real hit at Burke Lake. Surprisingly, ladies are more than ready to have a shot at 7:30 in the morning – real troopers!

My recipe is very simple – just a 50/50 mix of Fireball whiskey and Irish crème. It’s that delightful combo which is sweet and creamy at the start with a nice finishing burn at the end.
Mmm, makes me thirsty just describing it.

I did a little background search on birdie juice while I was thinking of what to write. It turns out that the term “birdie” was coined by men, but it was women who first imbibed birdie juice. We obviously thought that our birdies deserved more of a celebration! According to the website, Womens’ Golf Project, the juice’s inception occurred in 2002 at a club in Texas. A group of women were heading out for their round and the bartender had a bottle of whipped cream vodka that wasn’t selling so he offered it to the ladies so they could toast their birdies. It sounds plausible, doesn’t it? Good news: your juice can be made of whatever you enjoy. Popular choices include Fireball (cinnamon) whiskey, butterscotch schnapps, pink lemonade vodka, Rumchata.

Wow, we better get busy ladies, we have a lot of juice to try!

Did you know that if you hit a hole-in-one, you may receive recognition from multiple sources?

First, if you score an ace during leagues play, you should:

  • Turn in your scorecard as usual with a partner signature.

  • Give the hole-in-one ball to a BLWGC Board member to receive a recognition plaque at the end of the season.

If you're a member of the VSGA (Virginia State Golf Association), you can complete and submit their online recognition form: https://vsga.org/hole-in-one and receive a certificate and bag tag celebrating your accomplishment.

And, in some cases, golf club manufacturers offer hole-in-one recognition, too, so be sure to check at your manufacturer's website.

Special thanks to league member, Susan Lee, who provided all of the above information -- Thanks, Susan!
